Superhero Celebration, with Little Plastic

10/21/2014

We recently hosted a superhero birthday party. Not to be confused with the Batman party we had a few years ago. This one was Marvel Comics only. How does a 6 year old come up with this stuff? In what is now my usual party-throwing style, I limited the plastic as much as humanly possible and embraced the current season. Take a look.

Mason jar glasses with paper straws. We served apple cider for the kids. Table "runner" is a piece of fabric from my stash.

Bunting. No birthday party is really complete without it.

Decorate with comics from your husband's collection.

Put the comics EVERYWHERE.

More comics on an end table. More fabric from my stash. It helps to have a sewing business when it comes to decorating for a party with no plastic (but NOT necessary!)

More fabric draped around a flower. Instant superhero centerpiece.

Pumpkin superhero favors--my favorite!!! Wool felt was glued onto the pumpkins for a simple, seasonal, superhero party favor.

Instead of a cake, I baked cupcakes in foil liners. That candle is probably plastic (as well as the stickers), but we went simple with wooden toothpick decorations instead of fancy fondant (I'm not about to make my own, and I'm a little afraid of what's in the craft store variety).

Rainy day insurance--a cardboard puzzle. Thankfully everyone was able to run around outside all afternoon, but it's good to have a few indoor tricks up your sleeve, just in case.

Felt beanbag "Batarangs" for a beanbag toss. I was "allowed" to use these from the party two years ago, despite Batman being a DC Comics character.

Thor Hammer Scavenger Hunt. These are made with wooden tongue depressors, foil and some hidden candy.

Everyone seemed to have fun, especially the birthday boy! Bonus that I had very little to throw away at the end of the day. Extra bonus that I did not send any child home with any plastic that would be thrown away! Who says you have to have a goodie bag? If you want one, try a fabric one instead. A little advanced planning combined with not that much extra work will give you a really fun little-to-no-waste birthday party.
